Description
External Images is a WordPress and WooCommerce plugin that serves images from external URLs rather than importing them into the Media Library. Remote URLs are stored in post meta, and the plugin supplies the image and attachment data WordPress and WooCommerce expect without creating real attachment rows. It is aimed at sites with large image libraries where import time, CPU and disk use matter.
Key Features
- Faster catalogue imports – Because image download, attachment creation and thumbnail generation are skipped for each imported product, the slowest part of a catalogue import is removed.
- WooCommerce galleries and variations – External featured images, product galleries, variation images and full per-variation galleries all continue to work.
- Import tool integrations – Super Speedy Imports maps image columns automatically, while WP All Import and Datafeedr have dedicated compatibility paths.
- HTTPS and proxying – The plugin can upgrade an HTTP source to HTTPS where the host supports it, or proxy the image where it does not, so HTTPS pages stay secure.
- Social and structured data – External image URLs are included in Open Graph tags and WooCommerce product structured data so social product images remain present.
- Editor image field – An external image field sits below the featured image box in the post and product editor for entering remote URLs.
Who Is It For
This plugin suits WooCommerce store owners and content-heavy WordPress sites that already have images hosted on a CDN, S3, DigitalOcean Spaces or a supplier's server and do not want copies pulled into WordPress. It is also useful for anyone importing large product catalogues through tools such as WP All Import, Datafeedr or Super Speedy Imports.
