GPL License

Last updated: September 27, 2026

WordPress is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 or later. Themes and plugins that build on WordPress are distributed under the same license, and that is what makes a site like ThemeForWP possible.

What the GPL allows

Under the GNU GPL v2 (or any later version), anyone who receives GPL software has the freedom to:

  • use it for any purpose, on as many websites as you like, personal or commercial;
  • study and modify the source code;
  • redistribute copies, original or modified, under the same GPL terms.

The products on ThemeForWP are the original GPL-licensed files, redistributed under these terms. They are not nulled or cracked, and we do not add code to them.

What is not included

  • License keys and official services: the original developer’s license key, automatic updates from the developer’s servers, cloud features and one-click demo import may not be available.
  • Developer support: support from the original author is only provided to their own customers.
  • Trademarks: the GPL covers code, not brand names or logos. Product and company names belong to their owners and are used only to identify the products.
  • Non-GPL assets: some products bundle images, fonts, icons or stock media under separate licenses. Check those licenses before using such assets in your projects.

No affiliation

ThemeForWP is an independent distributor. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the WordPress Foundation, Automattic, or the developers of the products we distribute. If you need the developer’s official license, support or services, please buy directly from the developer, which also supports their work.
